My Experience at the Nine Arches Bridge
As part of the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, we arrived in Ella after visiting Colombo, the Sinharaja Rainforest, and Ratnapura, the City of Gems. Our goal was to explore the hill country, starting with a visit to Diyaluma and Ravana Falls. Next, we headed to the Nine Arches Bridge, and let me tell you, it was an amazing experience. Despite the crowds, it was still a thrill to see it up close. Since we were traveling with the tourism board, we had all the necessary drone permits, and it turned into quite the adventure to capture the best shots, especially when the famous train passed over the bridge.

When we arrived, a light drizzle started, and we weren’t sure if we’d be able to fly the drones. But we decided to go for it anyway. With at least four drones in the air, it felt like a military operation. Each drone operator was planning their shots carefully, making sure not to overlap with others and avoiding crashes, all while keeping an eye on the rain. The train was running late, and our batteries were getting low, so we decided to land the drones before it passed. Just as we were about to pack up, a police officer started walking in our direction. Thankfully, the ladies from the Tourism Board were quick to greet him and show him our papers. At the same time, we had Ricardo check the train’s timing. Once he gave us the signal, we launched the drones again and managed to get all the shots we needed before the train stopped on the bridge.

After the drone shots, we had some extra time since the train stopped for at least 15 minutes to let tourists take pictures with it. We grounded our drones and went up close to get the famous shots, leaning on the train door. It wasn’t the usual moving photo with the green scenery, but it was still a great imitation. It was fun that the train driver actually stopped specifically for the tourists. And the best part? It’s completely free! People had fun snapping pictures, until the driver honked the horn, signaling it was time to move. We stepped aside, and the train continued its journey. With the rain picking up and the day coming to a close, we decided it was time to head back to our shuttle. It was a fun yet stressful adventure, and I was glad we got to experience so much at the Nine Arches Bridge.
