Little Adam’s Peak: Technical Details

Starting from Ella City Center:

• Type: Out-and-Back Trail
• Distance: 4 km (2 km each way approx.)
• Duration: 1-1.5 hours of moving time (30–45 minutes each way)
• Total Elevation Change: 282m | +141m | -141m
• Altitude: Lowest point: 1,000m (Ella city center). Highest point: 1,141m (Little Adam’s Peak summit)
• Difficulty: Easy-Moderate. This is a short but steep hike, good for a quick outing with views over Ella’s hill country.
• Notes:
  • The trail is manageable for most fitness levels. The figures for this route come from a Wikiloc track of a similar hike, not from my own track.
  • Tuktuks can be used to shorten the hike, taking you to the trailhead and cutting down on the distance from the city center.

Starting from the Trailhead:

• Type: Out-and-Back Trail
• Distance: 2 km (1 km each way)
• Duration: 30–45 minutes of moving time (15–25 minutes each way)
• Total Elevation Change: 122m | +61m | -61m
• Altitude: Lowest point: 1,080m (trailhead). Highest point: 1,141m (Little Adam’s Peak summit)
• Difficulty: Easy. Starting from the trailhead makes this hike significantly easier, with a much shorter distance and less elevation gain.
• Notes:
  • A shorter, more relaxed version of the hike. These figures also come from a Wikiloc track, not from my own track.
  • Tuktuks are often used to reach the trailhead from Ella city center.

Is the Little Adam’s Peak Hike Worth it?

It is worth doing if you are in Ella and want an easy viewpoint. The summit looks over the surrounding mountains and tea plantations, and the path is well formed and open to most people, from casual walkers to experienced hikers. Sunrise is a popular time to go. I watched the sunrise over the Ella Gap from my hotel and hiked afterward.

From the summit you can see Ella Rock and, in the distance, Ravana Falls and the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery. I photographed Ravana Falls with a telephoto lens.

If you are staying in Ella, the hike fits easily into a morning.

Little Adam’s Peak: Curiosities

Name Origin: The name “Little Adam’s Peak” comes from the larger Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), a sacred mountain in Sri Lanka. The summit is often compared to Adam’s Peak because of its similar shape, so it is the “little” version for those who want a less demanding hike.

Location: Little Adam’s Peak is located near the town of Ella, in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, surrounded by lush tea plantations and mountain ranges.

Formation: The peak is part of the Uva Highlands in Sri Lanka’s central hill country. The central highlands are made of very old metamorphic rock rather than volcanoes, and the region has rolling hills and valleys.

Height: At 1,141 meters, Little Adam’s Peak looks over Ella, Ella Rock and the surrounding highlands. It is lower than its namesake, but the hike is short.

Cultural Significance: Adam’s Peak itself is a major pilgrimage site, and the surrounding area has Buddhist temples and monuments.

Climate: Due to its elevation, Little Adam’s Peak experiences a cool, temperate climate, with occasional mist and cooler temperatures in the mornings and evenings, especially during the rainy season.

Flora and Fauna: The trail passes tea plantations and forest with wildflowers, palm squirrels and many birds, which are listed in the section on what you can see.

Things to Do: Besides the summit, nearby places include Ella Rock, Ravana Falls, and the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery. The summit is a good spot for photography. The Flying Ravana zipline is also nearby, and the trail passes it.

Accessibility: The trailhead is a short distance from the center of Ella, and the path is well maintained. Guides give a walking time of 20 to 40 minutes from town. I did not walk it, because a private shuttle from the Tourism Board took the group to the trailhead.

When is the Best Time to Hike to Little Adam’s Peak?

Guides recommend the dry months, roughly January to March and up to May, for clearer skies and mild temperatures, and mornings tend to give the best light over the valley. I did the hike in October 2024, in the rainier part of the year, so check the forecast.

Rain can make the trails slippery and hide the views. The final gravel and dirt section can be muddy after rain.

What Clothing should I bring to do the Little Adam’s Peak Hike?

It is an easy, short hike, but it helps to be prepared, especially if you start early, when mornings can be cool. I wore comfortable clothes.

Essentials:

• Breathable T-shirt (Tech or Merino)
• Waterproof Jacket (lightweight, for possible rain)
• Puffer Jacket (for the cooler early mornings)
• Shorts or Pants (depending on weather)
• Hiking Shoes (comfortable, sturdy footwear)
• Backpack (small daypack, around 20-30 liters)
• Sunglasses (UV protection)
• Cap (or a beanie if it’s cold)
• Hiking Socks (preferably merino wool for comfort)
• Sunscreen (minimum SPF 50)
• Water and Snacks (to stay hydrated and energized)

How Much Does it Cost to Hike to Little Adam’s Peak?

Hiking to Little Adam’s Peak is free, with no entrance fee or permit. Nobody asked me for money at the top. If you take a tuk-tuk to the trailhead, guides put the fare at LKR 300 to 500 (about $1.50 to $3) from the town center, and the price varies with where you start.

It is also a good idea to bring some cash for snacks, drinks or souvenirs from vendors near the trail.

How to Do the Little Adam’s Peak Hike?

From Ella you can walk to the trailhead (guides give 20 to 40 minutes) or take a tuk-tuk (guides give LKR 300 to 500). The 2 km return trail has a steady ascent over dirt paths, concrete steps and some rocky sections. I reached the trailhead by private shuttle, passed the Flying Ravana zipline and the Ravana Pool Club, and climbed the concrete steps to the first summit. Starting early for the sunrise is popular, and guides give the hike as 1 to 2 hours.

Is the Little Adam’s Peak Hike Difficult?

The hike is relatively easy, with a steady ascent, concrete steps and some rocky sections. A few people in my group stayed behind because the steps were hard on their knees, but I found it manageable.

What Can I See in Little Adam’s Peak?

From the summit you can see Ella, the Ravana Falls, and the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, with the tea plantations around them. The viewpoint also looks toward Ella Rock and the Ella Gap.

On the way up I saw an Indian palm squirrel and birds including the red-vented bulbul, lesser yellownape woodpecker, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, common myna, common tailorbird and yellow-fronted barbet. I also saw an oriental magpie-robin and flowers such as angel trumpets and Malvaviscus sleeping hibiscus.

Hiking from Ella to Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arches Bridge (Round Trip)

A circular hike from Ella to Little Adam’s Peak and then down to the Nine Arches Bridge combines the two stops in one route. I did the two on separate days, so the figures below come from a Wikiloc track of a similar loop.

• Distance: 7-8 km (approx.)
• Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
• Total Elevation Change: 630m | +315m | -315m
• Altitude: Lowest point: 976m (Nine Arches Bridge). Highest point: 1,141m (Little Adam’s Peak Summit)
• Difficulty: Easy-Moderate. The route is manageable for most hikers, with a moderate level of fitness required for the elevation gain and descent.

Best Things To Do near Little Adam’s Peak

Several places are close by. You can visit Ravana Falls, a waterfall, or go to Nil Diya Pokuna, a natural pool inside a cave that takes some effort to reach, usually with a local tuk-tuk guide. You can also visit the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, or try the Flying Ravana zipline. The Ella Rock trail is another hike, and the Nine Arches Bridge is a well-known sight. On the day of the hike I also visited Ravana Cave, the monastery and the Halpe Tea Plantation and Factory, where you can learn about the tea-making process.

Further afield, you can explore the UNESCO-listed Sinharaja Rainforest, home to unique flora and fauna. In Ratnapura, also known as the City of Gems, you can tour gemstone mines. For a city, there is Colombo, the capital, which has modern attractions, markets and historical landmarks. Head south for Yala National Park for a safari, where you can see elephants and leopards. On the coast there is Galle and Galle Fort, which combines coastal views with colonial history. Sigiriya, with its ancient rock fortress, is another well-known sight.

Where to Eat and Drink near Little Adam’s Peak?

In Ella, guides mention Cafe Chill in the center for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Matey Hut, a small spot off the main street known for roti and kotu, Rainbow Inn for smoothie bowls and vegan salads, and MozzarElla by Nero Kitchen for pizza. I did not eat at any of them. After the hike I had lunch at the Oak Ray Ella Gap Hotel’s restaurant, which had a local food buffet.

Near the trail, Ella Flower Garden Resort is close to the trailhead and the Ravana Pool Club is a stop for drinks and snacks, and there are small kiosks along the way for water and snacks. I passed the Ravana Pool Club on the way up.

Where to Stay near Little Adam’s Peak?

Staying in Ella makes the hike easy to fit in. The town has accommodation from luxury resorts with views to budget homestays.

Ella is a short distance from Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge, so you can visit both at any time of day.

I stayed at Ella Mount Heaven during the press trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board and found it a bit rundown. The places below are researched picks from listings, not my stays.

Luxury:

• 98 Acres Resort & Spa – Set within a tea estate, close to the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, with an outdoor pool.
• EKHO Ella - Near the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, with views of the Ella Gap. The boutique hotel has 14 rooms, including Junior Suites with private Jacuzzis.

Boutique:

• Arawe Retreat – A renovated 150-year-old cottage surrounded by rice paddies, which suits couples, according to its listing.
• Tea Cabins – A boutique stay with a garden and a pool, a short walk from the Nine Arches Bridge and Ella Spice Garden.

Mid-range:

• Green Nature Paradise Ella – Near the Nine Arches Bridge, with views and cycling in the area.

Best Tours near Little Adam’s Peak

These tours are partner listings, and I did not book any of them. Several tours are sold from Ella. You can visit waterfalls such as Ravana Falls and Diyaluma Falls, or visit Nil Diya Pokuna, a pond surrounded by greenery. For local culture, there is a traditional Sri Lankan cooking class, or you can take a train ride from Kandy to Ella. Another option is a safari through Yala National Park to look for leopards and elephants. If you are short on time, an all-inclusive day trip that covers several landmarks is an option.

Can I Fly Drones in Little Adam’s Peak?

In Sri Lanka, drone usage is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL). While there are no specific rules for Little Adam’s Peak, general drone regulations apply:

• The maximum height is 150 feet (about 46 meters) above ground level.
• Operators must maintain a visual line of sight with their drone.
• Drones are prohibited near airports, military zones, and no-fly zones.
• Flying drones at night requires prior authorization.
• Insurance is required for camera drones over 200 grams.

Drones must be registered with the CAASL, and foreign visitors can get a temporary registration. Check the latest rules at caa.lk before you fly.

On this trip with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, the group had the permits to fly drones, mostly. If you plan to fly independently, check with the local authorities for your locations.

What’s the Difference Between Little Adam’s Peak and the Adam’s Peak?

Little Adam’s Peak and Adam’s Peak (also known as Sri Pada) are both located in Sri Lanka, but they differ significantly in terms of height, difficulty, and cultural significance.

Little Adam’s Peak, standing at 1,141 meters, is a much shorter and easier hike, making it suitable for most visitors, including those without extensive hiking experience. Located near the town of Ella, it has views over the surrounding landscape, including tea plantations and the Ella Gap. The hike is well-marked and relatively short, making it a popular choice for travelers looking for a rewarding but easy adventure.

On the other hand, Adam’s Peak rises to 2,243 meters and is known for its challenging and long ascent. It holds great religious significance in Sri Lanka, as it is believed to be the site of the Sri Pada, a sacred footprint at the summit. The footprint is considered a sacred mark by multiple religious groups: Buddhists believe it to be the footprint of Buddha, Hindus associate it with Lord Shiva, Muslims and Christians regard it as the footprint of Adam. Pilgrims travel to the top, especially during the pilgrimage season from December to May, to make the spiritual journey and watch the sunrise from the peak. The climb is physically demanding, with over 5,000 steps leading to the top, and it is considered a major pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka.

In summary, while Little Adam’s Peak offers a less strenuous hiking experience with beautiful views, Adam’s Peak holds a deeper cultural and spiritual significance, attracting those looking to engage in a more challenging pilgrimage or hike.

My Experience on the Little Adam’s Peak Hike

As part of the itinerary planned by the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, we began our day at sunrise at our hotel in Ella. Watching the sunrise over the stunning Ella Gap was an unforgettable experience. After soaking in the morning views, we hopped on our shuttle, which took us to the trailhead for the Little Adam’s Peak hike. Since we had explored the spectacular Nine Arches Bridge the previous day, today’s plan included the hike to Little Adam’s Peak, followed by visits to Ravana Cave, Halpe Tea Plantation, and the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery.

From Start to Summit

The trailhead for Little Adam’s Peak was easy to find, with clear signs pointing the way. The hike itself was straightforward, starting along a zigzagging path shaded by trees. Along the way, we passed the Flying Ravana Zipline and the Ravana Pool Club. Soon, the trail transitioned to concrete steps leading uphill. While a few people opted to stay back, saying it was tough on their knees, I found the hike to be quite manageable.

We climbed the steps to the first summit, which offered breathtaking views. Although there was a second viewpoint further along the ridge that required descending and climbing back up, we decided to stay at the main summit. From there, we captured some amazing photos with long-range lenses and launched our drones to capture the epic landscape from above. The buzzing sound of the drones annoyed a few dogs nearby, but thankfully, they lost interest quickly and didn’t bother us further.

The Views and Sightings

Normally, I’d spend time simply enjoying the view and relaxing, but showcasing Sri Lanka’s beauty was our mission, so we made the most of the opportunity to document the landscape from every angle. After about half an hour, we packed up our gear and began the descent. The hike back was as easy as the way up. On the way down, we spotted some squirrels and small birds, which I’ll share photos of below.

Little Adam’s Peak is an absolutely beautiful viewpoint, and I’d love to return someday to hike to Ella’s Rock as well. I’m also eager to experience the pilgrimage to the iconic Adam’s Peak, but I guess that adventure will have to wait for my next trip to Sri Lanka!
