The Punta Carola beach is the best beach on San Cristobal island if you’re looking for a place to relax and watch beautiful sunsets in peace without that many people around.

Compared to its nearby sister Playa Mann beach, where all the locals go to watch the sunset, here you won’t find any café or kiosk, and also not so many people playing music out loud with speakers, if there are at least you have 300meters of space to avoid them.

According to other websites, it’s also a great place to surf if you go on the right day. When I went it was like a swimming pool.

It’s easily accessible by foot from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and it’s free.

Where is Punta Carola Beach?

Punta Carola, or Point Carola, is located about 1km northwest of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno town on San Cristobal Island.

How To Get to Punta Carola Beach?

The only way to get to this beach is on foot.

• Distance: 1km.
• Walking time: Around 15 minutes.

The way to Punta Carola beach is pretty straightforward. You head onto Playa Mann right outside of town**, by taxi or by foot,** and keep walking straight on a paved path for 10 more minutes. Alternatively, you can also reach it through the Interpretation Centers’ path that leads to Cerro Tijeretas and Playa Baquerizo beach.

What to Bring to Punta Carola Beach?

Clothing & Accessories:

• Tshirt: Breathable Tshirt (Tech or Merino), or a Lycra
• Jacket: Waterproof Jacket
• Shorts: Shorts, and Swimming Clothes
• Shoes: Hiking Shoes, and Flip Flops
• Hat: Cap
• Sunglasses
• Dry-fast Towel
• Earth Pak Waterproof Dry Bag
• Change of Clothes

Useful Extras:

• GoPro/Camera
• Snorkeling Gear: Mask, Tube, and Fins
• Mosquito Repellent: The beaches on the Galapagos islands, especially at sunset, have a lot of mosquitos and usually also horseflies or “Tabanos” as they are called in Spanish and they are silent and leave you with a huge unpleasant swollen bite.
• Surfboard: If you’re a surfer this is one of the best places to surf on the island.
• Sunscreen +50 SPF
• Food / Snacks
• Thermos or Water-filtering Bottle
• First-Aid Kit

What Can i See at Punta Carola Beach?

It is possible to spot sea lions lounging on the beach or frolicking in the water, as well as observe marine iguanas, vibrant fish, and turtles. If luck is on your side, you may even catch a glimpse of a blacktip reef shark.

To ensure your safety and the well-being of the animals, it is crucial not to touch any of the creatures or corals. They are all living organisms that can be harmed if handled improperly.

In the case of sea lions, it is particularly important to maintain a distance of at least 2 meters from them. Touching them leaves a human scent, which can result in their expulsion from the colony, leading to their solitary demise. It is essential to respect the 2-meter distance rule to prevent any harm.

Additionally, for your own safety, it is advisable to be cautious around sea lions as they hold dominance in the Galapagos. Avoid obstructing their path or engaging with baby sea lions, as their protective adult parents may be nearby. Being in the vicinity of an adult male sea lion guarding its cub is not ideal.

My Experience at Punta Carola Beach

I have visited the Galapagos three times, and on all the occasions, I found myself returning to this particular beach.

The first time was in 2022, right after my visit to Playa Mann Beach. In my personal opinion, this beach surpasses Playa Mann by a large margin. I prefer serene and idyllic beaches without much commotion, and this beach fulfilled that expectation entirely.

Accompanied by my Portuguese friend Diogo, we simply relaxed and admired the sunset while I captured some photographs. Interestingly, during our time there, we did not encounter any sea lions or iguanas.

This beach is quite large, and its location is ideal for watching awesome sunsets. We had the pleasant company of some frigate birds before returning to town.

During my second visit, I had the chance to witness the beach’s true beauty in the daytime. The crystal-clear turquoise waters and the limited number of people made it a truly blissful place.

And on this last time, January 2026, I went there with my wife and my mother for sunset and were surprised by the beach completely full of sea lions. What a treat!
